Overhauling “No Child Left Behind”

Yesterday on Talk of the Nation, NPR’s Larry Abramson and Claudio Sanchez explain Obama’s proposed education overhaul and assess his new Race to the Top initiative.  Since the Bush Administration’s No Child Left Behind Act brought sweeping changes to our education system, many argue it emphasizes testing over learning.  You can listen to the Story below:

Overhauling No Child Left Behind

The Obama administration is focused on rewriting the NCLB law that aligns with the Race to the Top Fund.  Schools will need to embrace reform in order to receive federal money that is directed toward reform, improving teaching, and improving data collection, which is a really big term in education.  This is something Bill Gates is talking about: innovations in education, you can watch that video I posted last week by clicking here.

The bottom line is the Obama administration is introducing something new, and it’s something to talk about, and that’s exactly what the blogosphere is doing these days.  If we are going to reward success, we need to get past formula-funding programs that sends money regardless of how kids are doing.  I believe this administration is on the right track.
