Riding Your Bike Makes You Smart

Here is an interesting book hitting a few passions of mine - bikes, exercise and educationCity Cycling - A guide to today's urban cycling renaissance.  According to John Pucher and Ralph Buehler, by the third year of education, children that walk or ride to school are shown to be 6 months more academically advanced than children that have been driven to school.

A Good Start

A friend sent an article on best and worst jobs from online affiliates to roustabouts business careers.  Instantly I click on the link, read the article and compare my own profession to that of others.  Admittedly I look at jobs I could have taken and those I merely dream of doing but choose a different path for a number of reasons none of which worth mentioning.

Start With Why

As you know, the mind of an eight year old is constantly searching for answers.  Most if not all the questions that come from our youngest daughter start with “why” -  “why does dad travel so much, why don’t we have a dog” and my favorite “why can’t I have a cell phone”.  Is it not interesting in our early adolescent years we ask so many "why" questions out of our inquisitive nature and by the time we hit our teens we think we discovered all the answers?  At least I did.

Eye Opening Social Network Usage of Teens

This week marks the end of our exchange student stay in America.  Having a teen in our home for six months has been enjoyable and eye opening since our children have yet to reach the teen stage.  Since she arrived my family has catapulted into the technological age of devices (iPod, iPad mini, MacBook Pro x2) and social networks (Pinterest, Facebook, tumblr, Instagram).

Transportation for Hope High School Online

An update to the blog posting Transportation for Hope High School Online (January 9th, 2013):

We are grateful for the generosity of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix for their assistance in acquiring a van for our schools.  Their mission rings true to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.  With their kind support our collective impact will develop responsible citizens.

What Would You Say In 180 Seconds?

A few months ago I participated in the Social Venture Partners – Arizona Social Innovative Fast Pitch 2012 Expo.  The goal of this event was for nonprofits to “build the capacity of, and create visibility for, innovative local nonprofits and the social entrepreneurs who lead them”.  We participated in the program, where we received training, feedback and mentoring on how to articulate our story.  This was perfect timing for us as we focus on our 2020 strategic vision.  Fast Pitch was a rallying point for us

Happy 43rd to Blueprint Education

It was 43 years ago today that Blueprint Education incorporated into a fully independent non profit organization with a mission to help  all students achieve their dreams and experience those defining moments that would help them move on past their high school years.  Even back then, students were facing issues that conflicted with a traditional school and their options were very few.

Blueprint's Alternative Education program is getting ready to hold it's 8th grade promotion ceremony this afternoon.  I'm sure there will be lots of excited parents and family members extremely proud of their sons and daughters who will be receiving their promotion certificates tonight.
